UK Applicant Guide to NLV Health Insurance for Spain

Applying for Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa from the UK raises a specific set of questions: does your GHIC count, do you need an S1, how do you pay before you have a Spanish bank account, and what do London, Manchester and Edinburgh expect? This guide walks through the health-insurance part of a UK application from start to appointment, so you arrive with the right cover and the right paperwork.

UK applicant FAQs

Can I use my GHIC or EHIC for the NLV?

No. A GHIC or EHIC is designed for temporary or tourist visits and covers state-provided medically necessary treatment while you are away. The Non-Lucrative Visa is a residence route, and consulates normally expect private medical insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain, with comprehensive cover and no copayments, deductible or waiting periods where required. A GHIC or EHIC does not meet that standard — see the requirements.

Do I need an S1 instead of insurance?

Do not assume so. An S1 is issued to some people whose healthcare costs the UK continues to fund, such as certain UK state pensioners, and whether it can be used for an NLV application depends on your individual circumstances and the consulate. Many applicants arrange private medical cover to be safe. This is general information, not immigration or legal advice, so check your own eligibility and the instructions for where you apply.

Can I pay for NLV insurance from the UK?

Yes. You can normally arrange and pay for a Spanish NLV policy from the UK by debit or credit card, or by bank transfer, before you have a Spanish bank account, a NIE or a Spanish address. The certificate and proof of payment can then be issued ready for your appointment — see paying without a Spanish bank account.

Does my certificate need to be in Spanish for a UK application?

Certificates are commonly issued in Spanish, or in Spanish and English, because the consulate or visa centre reviews them. Even when applying from the UK, a Spanish-language certificate from a Spanish insurer is usually the most straightforward, and it should confirm the NLV conditions clearly — more on this on our page about whether the certificate needs to be in Spanish.

How late can I arrange cover before a UK appointment?

A suitable policy can often be arranged quickly, sometimes within a day, with the certificate and proof of payment issued soon after. Even so, it is best to allow time to check the wording, names and dates before your appointment. If your date is very close, see urgent NLV health insurance and tell us your deadline — we will be honest about what is realistic.
